Thesis
Written in fulfillment of the University of Cincinnati's five year, professional Bachelor of Urban Planning program

"Travel Behavior and University Students' Perceptions of Distance and Time"
The heart of the thesis is an analysis of data collected in a survey and mapping exercise I designed and administered to undergraduate students enrolled at the University of Cincinnati. The 22 question survey gathered data on respondent's travel behavior, perceptions of distance and walk time  along a frequently travelled route (each individual's most frequently travelled route to campus) as well as perceptions of distance and time between pairs of local landmarks. The mapping exercise was comprised of an 11" x 17" map of the study area (the campus and surrounding neighborhoods) and accompanied by instructions for respondents to draw the route most frequently travelled from his or her local residence to campus.

Respondents' local addresses were recorded in the survey, as well as perceptions of the distance each respondent thought his or her most frequently travelled route to school was and an estimate of how long it would take to walk the route. For respondents who lived within the study area I was able to transfer travel routes drawn in the mapping exercise to GIS and measure actual distances for comparisons; I used a standard walk speed to compare respondents' estimated walk times with a standard time per each distance. Likewise, I compared actual distances and walk times between landmark pairs to each respondent's perceptions of distance and walk times.

Respondents were categorized by most frequent mode of travel used (walking, biking public transportation, automobile), and whether or not respondents had access to a car.

Detailed analysis begins on pg. 22
